Johan van Oldenbarnevelt ( Jean d' Oldenbarnevelt ) (° September 14th 1547 with Amersfoort - † May 13rd 1619 with $the Hague), Lawyer (large boarder) of the States of Holland, just magistrate, skilful and burning negotiator friendly of the freedom of its country.
It fulfills various missions close to Elisabeth I {{Re}}, to Jacques I {{er}} and to Henri IV, and had glory to conclude with the Spain in 1609 the treaty which ensured the independence of the United Provinces.
To the head of the Republican party, he was opposed of all his capacity to the ambition of the Stathouder Maurice de Nassau, which threatened freedom of Holland; he lives himself by there exposed with the most violent attacks. Twice, he wanted to withdraw businesses; he was retained only by the authorities of the deputies of the States.
Maurice de Nassau, having finally taken the top, made it condemn like Hérétique in 1618 by the Synode of Dordrecht, because he had embraced the doctrines of the arminiens, and the following year he made it judge by a commission and condemn to die on the scaffold, showing it to have delivered his country to the Spaniards. He undergoes the torment with greatest dignity. He was 70 years old.
Its death provided to Antoine-Sailor Lemierre the subject of a tragedy.
