Johan August Arfwedson (born the January 12th 1792 with Skagersholm and dead the October 28th 1841 with Hedensö), was a Swedish chemist, discoverer of the Lithium.

Wire of a contractor, it became, after studies of Géologie, member of the college of geology of Stockholm. It is while working as collaborator of Jöns Jacob Berzelius that he discovered lithium in 1817 during the analysis of a mineral of Petalite.

In 1825, he married Sara Sofia von Ehreneim .

Its name was given to a mineral, the Arfwedsonite.
