Joann Sfar is a Dessinateur and Scénariste of Cartoon, born the August 28th 1971 with Nice, France. It has in particular coécrit the many albums of the series Donjon and the series the Cat of the rabbi .

Biography

After a philosophical course (control with Nice), Joann Sfar finished its formation with the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of the fine arts of Paris, in the workshop of Pierre Carron. In fact undoubtedly especially the courses of morphology of Jean-François Debord will mark it, as it tells it in its Carnets .

Joann Sfar attacks the cartoon by two completely different but simultaneous skews: in the editor Delcourt, he is seen like a scenario writer, and its work shows a formidable taste of the tale. At Association, it tells less agreed stories with a feature well with him, apparently off-hand but especially concerned not to waste the energy of the moment and inspiration by the concern of making a “beautiful drawing”. It approaches artists the humor or tuck pattern such as Ronald Searle, Sempé, and perhaps more than all Quentin Blake, the illustrator of the tales of Roald Dahl, than it admires. In addition, he asserts himself like a heir to the work of Hugo Pratt.

Scholar, curious about the cultures and the ideas, Joann Sfar developed in ten years only one work abundant and filling with enthusiasm which managed to reach the other public ones that of the traditional data base.

Dilettante, it jumps of the cock to the ass without worrying to complete the multiple series which it installs, without fixing themselves of calendars or forcing themselves formally, giving the impression of a work in wheel free, talentueusement couldn't-give-a-damn, and of which the only true unit is its author, who does not save any of his personal concerns to his public and does not hesitate to deliver its opinion over all: the Virility and Femininity, God, the Art, the Political , the History, the Philosophy, the Literature, the Cinema, the cultures of the countries which he visits or of which he attends the nationals, the Musique, etc

He held a weekly page ( My book of awakening ) in Charlie-Hebdo between mid- 2004 and September 2005. He says to have given up this heading by lassitude of the internal ideological controversies to the drafting of the weekly magazine.

After the cartoon, the philosophical comment ( Ingenuous and the Banquet , Bréal editions) and the novel ( the Man tree ), Joann Sfar attacked a new challenge: the writing of a scenario for the cinema.

Joann Sfar is also musician. It is told that it would have converted Mathias Malzieu, singer of the group Dionysos, with the charm of the Ukulélé. The two men, friendly close, occurred besides together on scene. Sfar is also the author of small pockets of the group and of the clip of the song “Your laces are fairies”. In the musical field, it also realized, with Kerascoët, the clip “Hyacinthe” for Thomas Fersen.

Pet of the profession, Joann Sfar saw himself devoting many portraits and files in the specialized magazines (cf the file in the 9th Art ). He also obtained very many prices and rewards, like the Prix of Thirty year the of the Festival of Angouleme, exceptional price decreed in 2004.

Leading activity

Joann Sfar occupied the function of director of collection in the editor Bréal Jeunesse, where it published books for children and young people refused by the traditional editors of the sector because of their topics considered to be sensitive: religion, atheism, virginity… The financial brittleness of this editor pushed it in 2005 to stop this collection.

In 2005, it is named director of the new collection of cartoons “Bayou” in the editor Gallimard.
