Jeronimo Caserio

Sante Geronimo Caserio (September 8th 1873 - August 16th 1894) was a Anarchiste Italy N, Assassin of Marie François Sadi Carnot, president of the III {{E}} French République . The June 24th 1894, Caserio Poignard has mortally president Carnot during a procession. Condemned to dead by the Court of Assizes of the the Rhone, on August 3rd, it was guillotine the next on August 16th.

It was born in a country family. It had many brothers and sisters and his/her father died, in an asylum, Pellagre (a disease caused at that time by a bad food in the peasants who nourished corn almost exclusively). Not wanting to be the responsibility of his mother, whom he loved much, at the ten years age, he left the house and gained Milan. He found there work like apprentice in a baker. He came into contact with the anarchistic mediums of the end of the XIXe century, founded even a small called anarchistic circle “has EP” (“with foot”, within the meaning of without money). Pietro Gori remembered of him like very generous companion; he told to have seen it, in front of the Labor market, to distribute to the unemployed of the bread and the anarchistic booklets which he made print with his thin wages. He was identified and card-indexed during a public demonstration, and was forced to flee, initially in Suisse and then in France.

June 24th, it killed president Carnot during a public ceremony in Lyon by striking it in the middle using a knife with the handle red and black (colors which symbolizes anarchy). After this act, it did not try to flee, but ran around the car of the dying man while shouting “Lives anarchy”. It passed in Court of Assizes August 2nd and 3rd and was guillotine the 16 of the same month.

In front of the court which condemned it to death, he says inter alia:

“ Eh well, if the governments use against us rifles, the chains, the prisons, do we have, us them anarchistic, which defend our life, to remain locked up on our premises? Not. On the contrary, we answer the governments with dynamite, the bomb, the stylet, the dagger. In a word, we must make our possible to destroy the middle-class and the governments. You who are the representatives of the middle-class company, if you want my head, take to it ”.

With the lawsuit, indeed, it never tried to disavow its gesture, nor to ask the pity of the jury. The possibility was offered to him to plead the Mental disease but in payment it should have delivered the names of some accomplices, it thus refused (“Caserio is baker, not spy”). In cell, while it awaited the execution, one sent the priest of Motta Visconti to him to confess it, but it refused to hear it and drove out it. On the scaffold, finally, a moment before dying, it launched to crowd: “Courage, friends! Live anarchy! ”.

After the judgment of Caserio Health, there were various acts of violence and of intolerance of part of the French against the Italian workers, compatriots of the assassin of their president. An anarchist was stopped to have shouted in a public room his sympathy towards Caserio and a prisoner was violently struck for the same reason. The criminal gesture of the Italian anarchist found certain a resonance among other French anarchists.

The assassination which it made involved the vote by the assembly of the third of the laws known as “scélérates” of which the goal was to supplement the repressive arsenal against the carried out anarchistic ones (sources: Journal officiel de la R3epublique fran1caise, year 1894).
