Jeantes

Jeantes is a common French, located in the department of the Aisne and the area Picardy.

Geography

History

The site was occupied as of the Gallic and Gallo-Roman time, as attest it the found vestiges.

The village is mentioned as of XIIe century in the forms “Jantha” or “Janta-Curtis” ( Jeantes the Court ).

Seigniory of the Abbey of Clairfontaine in XIIIe century, the village (named “Jeante-the-city” at the XVIIe century) belonged to the counts d' Apremont until the French revolution.

Extérieur: The remarkable rectangular bell-tower-keep, flanked of two square towers, is out of brick, material of almost all the strengthened churches of Thiérache.

Intérieur: The baptismal font, out of blue stone of Turned, date from XIIe century. The characteristic of the building is also due to its recent murals. The 400 m of frescos, pointing out the invoice of Modigliani and Chagall, were carried out in 1962, at the request of the priest of Jeantes, by the Dutch painter Charles Eyck.
