Jean Vincent Felix Lamouroux

Jean Vincent Felix Lamouroux is a Biologiste French born the May 3rd 1779 with Agen and deceased the March 26th 1825 with Caen. His/her father, Claude Lamouroux (1740-1820), was manufacturer and musician with Agen (he was also the mayor of Agen in 1791-1792) and founded with Lacepède, Jean-Girard Lacuée, future Count de Cessac (1752-1841) and Jean Florimond Boudon of Saint-Mercies (1748-1831), the academic Company of Agen. Jean-Vincent followed the courses of Botany of Boudon of Saint-Mercies to the central school of Agen.

Jean Vincent Felix Lamouroux is more particularly interested in the marine organizations (Algue S, Hydrozoaire S…). Since 1805, it publishes a Dissertation on several species of Fucus before coming to settle in Paris in 1807, after the bankruptcy of the factory of Indian fabrics of his father.

It is named in 1807 correspondent of the Academy of Science and, in 1808, he becomes assistant professor of natural history to the Academy of Caen. He occupied of it the pulpit of professor in 1811. He developed the Société linnéenne Apple-brandy to which belong his/her friend Jean-Baptiste Bory of Saint-Vincent (1778-1846), the doctor Jacques-Amand Eudes-Deslongchamps (1794-1867), Dominique François Delise (1780-1841) and Sebastien Rene Lenormand (1796-1871). He will become also director of the Botanical garden of the city.

He contributes in many articles of the " General annals of sciences physiques" (1819-1821) and of the traditional Dictionnaire of natural history (1822-1831) which implements Bory of Saint-Vincent, also originating in Agen.

In 1813, it presents an organization of the classification of the algae that the English phycologist Dawson Turner (1775-1858), father-in-law of the botanist William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865), adopts and greets like clever and giving a total comprehension of the subject. One owes inter alia in Jean Vincent Lamouroux the distinction between green algas, brown and red.

In marine biology, it is also interested in the fixed animal organizations:

  • Classification of the flexible coralligenous polypiers, vulgarly named zoophytes (1816) methodical Caen
  • Exposure of the kinds about the polypiers (1821) Paris.

In 1821, it makes appear the " Summary of an elementary course of geography physique" exposing the bases of aerography, hydrography, astronomy and of Géognosie.

Lamouroux was also interested in the fossils: he discovered with his pupils of the fossils of reptiles in Normandy (at the origin of a famous polemic between Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) and Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844) in 1825-1830) and made print a treaty on this subject.

In 1822, Jules Dumont d' Urville (1790-1842) which made its studies in Caen and which prepares a forwarding around the world on board the Coquille , request with Lamouroux its support for the description of the samples of polypiers that it will report of this exploration.

By its will have and its engagement scientists, Jean Vincent Felix Lamouroux influences Arcisse de Caumont (1801-1873). It will thus give its support for the future founder of the French company of archeology. It will have as a pupil, friend and successor in his post of professor in Caen Eudes-Deslongchamps.
