Jean Tauler
Jean Tauler , ( Taulerus ), born towards approximately (1300 - 1361) was a theologist, mystic and Alsatian preacher called “ the Doctor enlightened ”.
He was born and died in Strasbourg. He formed part about the Dominicains, as Maître Eckhart of which he was the pupil. Its teaching is connected with that of Eckhart Master, but it was also influenced by its thorough studies of the Neo-Platonists, particularly of Proclus and Pseudo Denys Aréopagite.
Its preachings develop especially the topic of the renouncement of oneself and preach an austere morals. It made probably its studies with Cologne and remained with Basle, but besides some voyages it passed all its life to Strasbourg. He advised the “ Amis of God ” which lived freely in poverty in a community withdrawn in order to help in their search of an interior way. It was a remarkable preacher.
It is especially in its sermons that one can study his mystical doctrines, quite far away from the pantheism of Maître Eckhart. In short, he teaches that the divine grace is very powerful and that it is necessary to be given up with the will of God. But whereas Eckhart taught the instantaneity of the revelation of divine in the man, Tauler insists on the importance of an uninterrupted effort and patient. One arrives at the renouncement of oneself by the imitation of the life of Jesus.
One knows work of Tauler, with certainty, only eighty-four Sermons , which is in fact of the notes of listeners who were published in 1498.
It left several works looked like traditional by the mystics: Meditations on the life and the passion of the Saver , divine Institutions , Marrow of the heart , spiritual Letters , the German whole. Its Works , several times printed in the German text, was translated into Latin by Laurentius Surius, Cologne, 1548; the divine Institutions were put in French by Loménie de Brienne (1665), and were inserted in the the literary Pantheon , Paris, 1835.
