Jean Ernest Ducos de Lahitte
Jean Ernest of Cos of Hitte , Viscount, born the September 5th 1789, with Bessières (Haute-Garonne), deceased the September 22nd 1878 with Gragnague (Haute-Garonne). Its death was recorded officially with Bessières.
French major general, senator, Foreign Minister.
It entered to the Polytechnic school in 1807. To the exit of the school of application of Metz in 1809, it was sent in Spain as artillery lieutenant and there made the campaigns of 1810, 1811, 1812, 1813 and 1814. The occasions to be distinguished did not miss during these heroic times, and Mr. of Hitte benefitted from it. He was in particular noticed with the Siège of Cadiz. Having left the Armed with the South to belong to the Armed with North or the Pyrenees, it appeared as captain and was shown in it with much distinction to the Bataille of Vittoria, with the combat delivered in front of Pampelune, with the Affaire of Bidassoa, the Combat of the blockade of Bayonne.
Under the Restoration, one finds Mr. of Hitte playing a big role in all forwardings which were made by the government, i.e. in forwardings of Spain, Morée and Algiers, and it is him which in 1823 ordered artillery as lieutenant-colonel with the seat of Cadiz, of this same city which had seen its beginnings thirteen years before.
Appointed colonel following the Countryside of Spain, it was selected in 1828 and 1829 to order artillery in Greece, at the time of the Expédition of Morée. It is there that it conquered the Brigadier general rank of , on February 22nd 1829, at 39 years. One year after (1830), it had to order artillery of the expeditionary Armée with Africa (seat and Prise of Algiers), it was announced especially to the catch of the Fort of the Emperor.
The Africa also saw it implementing, under the Gouvernement of July 1830. It took share, as commander the artillery in the decisive campaigns of 1839 and 1840. One saw it giving evidence of his skill in the Col of Mouzaïa, the Affaire of Médéah, etc
It is following these campaigns that it obtained the Major general rank of , the June 21st 1840.
The Révolution of February 1848 found it president of the artillery committee, of which it directed work with a great distinction. The cause of the order always counted it among its more enthusiastic defenders and it gave a new proof of its devotion, by accepting the wallet of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in November 1849 which it kept until January 9th 1851.
Named representing North at the legislative assembly, in November 1850, it resigns on February 7th 1851. It was named general inspector of the 1st artillery district and the polytechnic school.
The general of Hitte adhered to the coup d'etat of December 2nd, belonged to the advisory commission and had to sit at the Sénat by order in Council of January 26th 1852; he returned in his private life on September 4th 1870.
