Born in 1925 in the Berry, Jean Derval receives an artistic education as graphic designer and poster artist at the School of the Applied arts of Paris. Its vocation for ceramics came to him fortuitously while creating services in sandstone for the house from goldsmithery Christofle.
It joined his comrades Robert Picault and Roger Capron in 1947 with Vallauris, where they created a workshop of pottery the previous year. The elegant world and that of the artists, Picasso with Vallauris at the head, is found at that time on the Riviera. Jean Derval returns in 1949 to the famous workshop Madoura where it côtoie the Andalusian Master during 2 years.
The art of ceramics then knows with Vallauris a true revival, with the creation of works intended to find their place in the daily life.
In 1951, Jean Derval founds finally his own establishment, the Gate. Instead of creating a true manufacture, it chooses the difficult way of the " parts uniques". He proposes a repertory of domestic potteries inspired primarily by human forms and animal, reinterpreted starting from the lessons of the cubism and the abstraction. Its Christian enthusiasm the conduit also to cover religious subjects such as representations of the Virgin and saints. Lastly, its Mediterranean roots are attested by the important place taken in its work by mythology of ancient Greece.
In the Sixties, marked by an evolution of the taste towards sandstones with the austere colors at the expense of earthenware coloured affectionate by Jean Derval, this one explores architectural ceramics with a vision of sculptor more than of potter. a 26 minute old documentary film realized by Pierre REMY (PMAvision) in 1998 recalls the career of Jean DERVAL.
