Jean Balland
Jean Balland (July 26th 1934 - March 1st 1998), French, cardinal man of the church and Primacy of Gaules.
Jean Marie Julien Balland was born the July 26th 1934 with Bué (Cher) in Sancerrois, fifth child of a family of vine growers. It was ordered priest with Bué the September 3rd 1961 for the diocese of Bourges, after studies with the French seminar of Rome (Gregorian University) and its military service, partly in Algérie. He was professor of philosophy to the Great regional seminar of Tours, then with the Great seminar of Poitiers. He was general vicar of the diocese of Bourges.
Named bishop of Dijon the November 8th 1982, it accepted episcopal ordination in the cathedral of Dijon the December 12th 1982 of the hands of Mgr Paul Vignancour, archbishop of Bourges assisted Mgr Albert Decourtray (Lyon) and of Mgr Lucien Daloz (Besancon).
The August 8th 1988 it succeeds Mgr Jacques Ménager with the metropolitan seat of Rheims and takes possession of its load the September 26th 1988. He is established the October 16th 1988.
The May 27th 1995 it succeeds the Cardinal Decourtray brutally deceased, he becomes archbishop of Lyon and primacy of Gaules. The pope Jean-Paul II the pupil with the rank of cardinal the February 21st 1998 (Cardinal-priest of Saint Pierre-with-bonds). He dies on March 1st 1998 at the hospital of Cross-Russet-red (Lyon) of the continuations of a lung cancer.
Regarded as a discrete and not very inclined man with the communication, it had however created a radio diocésaine with Rheims, of timid appearance, it hardly liked to be delivered. The commentators underlined his direction of listening and the opening, like its " large smoothness politique". It had known to untie very complex situations in its loads, bringing back, such Dijonese monastery, near to Mgr Lefebvre, the integrism to the conciliar spirit. Its direction of the responsibilities had been illustrated in 1992, when it had made close the cathedral of Rheims and cancel the masses, Jean-Marie Le Pen having announced her intention to hold a meeting on the square.
Its currency was “Veritatem facientes in caritate” (To make the truth in the love)
