Jean-Olivier Briand

Jean-Olivier Briand (January 23rd, 1715 - June 25th, 1794) was the bishop of Quebec of 1766 with 1784. He played a big role during the military invasion of Benedict Arnold and could regulate the crisis of succession after the British Conquête.

Born on November 27th, 1715 in the parish from Plérin, Diocese of Saint-Brieuc, in Brittany, arrived at Quebec on August 17th, 1741, in the capacity as secretary of M {{gr.}} of Pontbriand. After the death of this one, it was chosen by the chapter, on September 11th, 1764, to be a bishop of Quebec. It passed in England the same year, and after having obtained the approval of the king, it accepted his bubbles of the pope Clément XIII, dated January 21st, 1766.

He was crowned, on March 16th of the same year, with Paris, in the vault of Holy-Marie-in Merry, parish of Surrenne, by Mgr Charles-Gilbert Demay de Termont, bishop of Blois, with this authorized by Mgr Christophe de Beaumont, archbishop of Paris. He passed by again in England, and arrived at Quebec on June 28th, 1766. He took possession of his seat on July 19th, in the vault of the Séminaire of Quebec, being used then as cathedral.

He chooses a coadjutor in 1770, and, on March 16th, 1774, he made his solemn entry in the church cathedral. He dislocated himself of sound évêché on November 20th, 1784, and remained with the seminar of Quebec. He there died on June 25th, 1794, 79 years old 5 months and 2 days, and was buried in the chorus of the cathedral the 27 of the same month below the steps which lead to the sanctuary, at equal distance from the two side doors.
