Jean-Joseph Languet de Gergy
Jean-Joseph Languet de Gergy , born with Dijon the August 25th 1677 and died in Direction the May 11th 1753, is a man of the church and theologist French, bishop of Soissons then archbishop of Direction.
Its life and its work
Born from a father Public prosecutor at the Parliament of Burgundy, he is compatriot and protected from Bossuet, which introduces it near Louis XIV and the fact of naming chaplain of the dauphine . He is at the same time general vicar of Autun, diocese in which the parish of Paray-le-Monial is where Marguerite-Marie Alacoque is buried. Charged with inquiring into the miracles which one says to be oneself produced around his tomb, he will write a biography of holy in 1729. He is named bishop of Soissons in 1715 and he is elected member of the French Academy in 1721. He is named archbishop of Direction in 1730 and to advise State in 1747.Its life of Marguerite-Marie Alacoque is violently attacked by the Jansenists opposed to the worship of the Sacré-coeur. Defender moreover of the bubble '' Unigenitus '', it is mingled with many controversies politico-nuns and makes known himself both for the number the corrosive one of his lampoons. He belongs to the “party of the excessively pious people” opposed to the philosophers of the Lumières and savagely fights the candidatures of Montesquieu and Voltaire for the Academy.
Languet de Gergy, in addition to its religious treaties and lampoons, is the author of books of offices, Catéchisme S and pastoral letters.
