Jean-François Humbert de Girecourt

Jean-François Humbert , count de Girecourt, is a statesman which was used the duchy as Lorraine. It was born with Bruyères in 1663 and died in Nancy in 1754.

Youth

Jean-François Humbert belonged to a family which was with the service of the dukes of Lorraine since the 16th century. He was the son of François Humbert. He makes his studies of right under the French occupation and obtains a license with the Université of Pont-à-Mousson on March 7th 1684 and is received as lawyer at the Parliament of Metz on April 13rd of the same year. In December 1685 he becomes adviser with the Bailliage of Épinal.

The rise

It owes its rise to the duke Léopold after this one returned in its duchy after the Traité of Ryswick. In 1701, it receives the title of Delegate extraordinary for the mining businesses and in charge of the inspection of the money mines of Bleurville, and a few years later becomes Grand Master of National Forestry Commission. He was then Secretary of State, then Chef of the Council of Finances.

A Vosgean lord and a benefactor

According to the sources, Jean-François Humbert is already lord of Girecourt in 1696. In 1705 it acquires the castle and of the grounds with Girecourt, between its birthplace of Bruyères and Épinal. The duke of Lorraine the fact baron de Girecourt in 1722, and his/her son François III the fact count on January 18th 1737.

He is also lord of the Low-Vosges, lord of Vaubexy, Faucompierre, Vaudicourt, Dompierre, Grandvillers and other places.

He is at the origin of the foundation of the hospital of Bruyères, confirmed by Letters patent of the duchess regent Elisabeth Charlotte on August 2nd, 1731 and entrusted to the sisters of Saint-Charles. In 1739, in the absence of the duchess dowager, he is Régent and Chancellor of the principality of Commercy. After 1744, it is withdrawn with Nancy where it dies on June 5th 1754 at 91 years the honourable age.

Family

He married in first weddings Marguerite Gauthier de Vienville, girl of the provost of Saint-Dié Claude Gauthier, known as of Vienville, of which he had a girl. He married in second weddings Suzanne Raymonde Roy, baroness of Serocourt and finally a fore-mentioned woman Marguerite-Sébastienne, who died in Bruyères at the age of almost 101 years.

By the marriage of his/her Marguerite-Suzanne daughter with Charles-Dieudonné count de Bourcier, the field passed in the family of the counts de Bourcier de Villers which had it until the 19th century.
