Jean-Etienne Guettard

Jean-Etienne Guettard is a geologist, a mineralogist and a Naturaliste French, born the September 22nd 1715 with Étampes and dead the January 6th 1786 with Paris.

He studies the Médecine with Paris and becomes the conservative of the collections of Natural history of the duke of Orleans. He becomes assistant botanist on July 3rd 1743 with the Academy of Science, then associated botanist on May 16th 1758, boarder botanist on July 20th 1758, boarder of the class of botany and agriculture at the time of the reorganization of April 23rd 1785. He is the pupil of Rene-Antoine Ferchault de Réaumur (1683-1757) and of Antoine de Jussieu (1686-1758).

He is in particular the author of:

  • Observations on the plants (Durand, Paris, two volumes, 1747), where it quotes his observations and those of his grandfather, Descurain, pharmacist with Étampes.
  • mineralogical Chart, where one sees the Nature of the terreins of Canada and Louisiana. Drawn up by Philippe Buache of ac. sciences on the searchs and for a Report for Mr. Guettard of same Acadadémie. 1752. (It is the first mineralogical chart of North America.)
  • Mémoires on various parts of sciences and arts (L. Prault, Paris, 3 volumes, 1768-1770).
  • It translates the Natural history… of Pline Old the (Paris, twelve volumes, 1771-1782).
  • Memories on the mineralogy of Dauphine the (printing works of Clousier, Paris, 2 volumes, 1779).
  • mineralogical Atlas and description of France, undertaken by order of the King (Didot the elder one, Paris, 1780).

It leaves important work, as well in Géologie or Minéralogie as in Botanique. It is interested in the study of the Volcan S of Auvergne. It is interested in the Flore and the Fossile S of the Paris region.

Carl von Linné (1707-1778) dedicated the to him Guettarda of Rubiaceae.
