Jean-Albert Ier de Mecklembourg-Schwerin , (in German Johann-Albrecht Ier von Mecklenburg-Schwerin), born the December 22nd 1525 with Güstrow, deceased the February 12th 1576 with Schwerin.

He was duke of Mecklembourg-Güstrow of 1547 with 1556, duke of Mecklembourg-Schwerin of 1557 with 1576.

Marriage and descent

The February 14th 1555, Jean-Albert Ier de Mecklembourg-Schwerin married Anne of Prussia (1527 - 1591), (girl of Albert de Brandebourg)

Three children were born from this union:

  • Albert de Mecklembourg-Schwerin (1556 - 1561)

  • Sigismond de Mecklembourg-Ivenack (1561 - 1603), duke of Mecklembourg-Ivenack, in 1593, it married Claire de Poméranie († 1623), (girl of the duke Bogislav XIII of Poméranie).

Biography

In 1547, Jean-Albert Ier de Mecklembourg-Schwerin succeeded his/her father and reigned jointly with his brothers Ulrich de Mecklembourg-Güstrow and Georges de Mecklembourg on the principality of Güstrow. However, his/her Ulrich brother succeeding his cousin Magnus III of Mecklembourg-Schwerin died accidentally in 1550, became administrator of évêché of Schwerin, as for Georges de Mecklembourg-Schwerin, he partipait with the war of the Ligue of Smalkade against Charles Quint. In 1556, Jean-Albert Ier de Mecklembourg-Schwerin succeeded his/her uncle Henri V of Mecklembourg-Schwerin. He was regarded as a large patron of arts and sciences.
