It is the first album of Jane Birkin. Gainsbourg had proposed to him to take again the duet that it had recorded, without leaving it, with Brigitte Bardot. It prepares then an album by writing songs for Jane Birkin (“Jane B.”), supplemented by recoveries, by itself, of songs which it had written for others (“Elisa”, “Lollipops”,…).

The album is placed under the double sign of Eros and Thanatos. To the celebrations of the physical love, in the two songs which link the two interpreters, the morbid inspiration of “Jane B is opposed.”, on an assassination, or of “the Canary is on the balcony”, on the suicide of an young girl.
