Jan Vansina

Jan Vansina (Antwerp, Belgium, September 14th 1929) is a historian and anthropologist specialist in the Africa. He was initially medievalist and more known ethnographist but for his studies concerning the Africa. He concentrated above all on the history of the African companies before the European contact, and is regarded as the largest specialist in the history of the people of central Africa. He published much on the subject.

Vansina obtained a doctorate of history to the catholic Université of Leuwen in 1957. He is today professor with the Université of Wisconsin-Madison and lives with Madison, WI. He assisted Alex Halley (the author of the novel " Roots: The Saga off year American Family ") to clear good number of African words which one brought back by the ancestors of Alex, and to determine their origin mandingue.

Surely by coïncidance, Robert Ludlum published in 2000 a spy novel called the Treason Prométhée , of which one of the characters is called Jan Vansina.
