Biography

Wimpfeling made its studies of Philosophie and Théologie starting from 1460 with Freiburg-in-Brisgau, as from 1466 with Erfurt and in 1469 - 70 with the Université of Heidelberg. Professor since 1471, he became senior of the university of Heidelberg in 1481. In 1484, he became preacher with the Cathédrale of Speyer and turned over to Heidelberg as professor in 1498. From 1500, it lived with Strasbourg being devoted to the writing, before turning over in its birthplace in 1515.

With its Germania , written in 1501, Wimpheling passes for the founder of the Historiographie national allemande. It tries to prove there to the equality of the last German towards the Humaniste S Italian S and French, which led it to exaggerated interpretations of the sources. This caused an argument with the theologist Thomas Murner of Strasbourg.

With Johannes Reuchlin, he is the first poet of the German humanistic drama. With the writings Of integritate , Isidoneus germanicus , Diatriba of proba puerorum institutione and Adolescentia it had a considerable influence on the pedagogy of its time.

Favorable to the ideas of Martin Luther at the beginning, it supported a catholic humanism later, while strongly criticizing the secularization of the clergy.
