Jacques Pauthe
Jacques Pauthe is a painter French born in 1809 with Castres, dead in 1889 with Perpignan. Initially, Portraitist, then artist in religious mural, it carried out many works in the Tarn, the Herault, the Roussillon and in other prestigious buildings (Issoudun, Richelieu, Orleans, Besancon…). It is undoubtedly about most prolific of the French religious artists of the 19th century, nearly 40 religious monuments were decorated with its hand of which more half remain. One can even speak about a Pauthe dynasty, because his/her Antoine father is attested former painter. He would have in particular collaborated with his son on the vault of the Jesuits in Castrate. Jacques Pauthe had two girls and two wire. The last, Paul was him also painter of history, it helped his/her father in a great number of achievements, timidly since 1870, but more promptly as from 1873. It continued the work of his father, by carrying out great murals and some religious tables, one knows of him an allegorical work to decorate a ceiling with the Rigaud museum with Perpignan (work given by the author unrolled and photographed in April 2007), a religious table sold by an antique dealer in Montlouis (66), the vault St Fulcran in the cathedral of Lodève about 1884 (one at the time does not know if it painted it only or with his father, already 73 years old!) and especially the whole decoration of the church St Matthieu of Perpignan in 1887 (that his/her father had already started with the decoration of the vault of the co. Epines in 1870). After the death of Jacques Pauthe, Paul evaporates literally, one does not know anything him after this date, even not the date of his death, it however has without any doubt continued at least until 1905 painting in the religious buildings (with an aim of perreniser the formidable cultural heritage of his/her father to as well from the pictorial point of view and esthetics as from the spiritual point of view). This last rather particular aspect of the family in his report/ratio with the religion show that they were undoubtedly extremely pious.
A thesis of doctorate on painter PAUTHE (like his family and its work) is in hand by Samuel TOUTAIN with the UFR of Perpignan (information, discovered or information with the address: samueltoutain@yahoo.fr).
