Issoire

Issoire is a common French, located in the department of the Puy-de-Dôme and the area of Auvergne.
It is one of the four Sous-préfecture S of the department with Ambert, Riom and Thiers.
Its inhabitants is called Issoiriens.

Geography

Located at the south of Clermont-Ferrand, close to the A75, in edge To combine it, it is crossed by the Couze Pavin, affluent Allier.

History

Named formerly Isiodorensis , " Issoire Belle" have through its term the memory of a Gallo-Roman origin . Several objects going back to this time were discovered as of 1780: ancient ballot boxes, currencies Gaulois be and Roman, funerary vases Gallo-Roman.

The Middle Ages

Wars of religion

A Protestant is burned alive in 1548. October 15th, 1575 (Fifth war of religion), the city is taken and plundered by the troops of the captain Merle. At the time of the following war, in June 1576, the city is taken again and plundered by the royal army of the duke of Anjou. The town of Issoire is taken by the members of a league on February 10th, 1590. The church Saint-Austremoine is one of the most beautiful Romance churches of Auvergne, with the four other churches known as “major”:

Old abbey church of a Benedictine abbey, it was built at the 12th century in arkose , (a fair stone of the surroundings).

Ransacked by the captain huguenot Blackbird at the time of the wars of religion, it was restored several times. It is classified under the historic buildings since 1835.

Anecdote

Issoire is, with Ambert, one of the two sub-prefectures victims of the hoaxes arbitrary and anarchizing of the seven heroes of the '' Copains '', novel of Jules Romain published in 1913.
