Isocyanate

A isocyanate is a made up organics characterized by the sequence: -N=C=O

The isocyanates are an important resource of various industrial sectors: paper, textile, adhesive, insulation (foam polyurethane)…

The isocyanates are very reactive organic species; in order to control this reactivity the recourse to the blocking of the function isocyanate is carried out in particular to make it possible to store and preserve during time these compounds. Blocking (called protection sometimes, the protection term here does not correspond exactly at the end not used in organic chemistry) is carried out by using molecules known as agent of blocking such as phenols, lactams, oximes… Generally the agents of blocking are compounds with unstable hydrogen. To obtain blocked isocyanates water soluble, the agent of blocking classically used is bisulfite (HSO3-). The isocyanates thus protected remain reactive with goods Nucléophile such as the Amines.
