Irish Museum off Modern Art
The Irish Museum off Modern Art (Irish Museum of Modern art), also indicated by the abbreviation IMMA , opened in May 1991. It is known like the first national structure for the collection and the exposure of works of Modern art and contemporary. It is located in old Royal Hospital de Kilmainham, a building of the 17th century, close to the station of Heuston in the west of the downtown area of Dublin. Enrique Juncosa is its current director. Before that, he was director-assistant of the Musée Reina Sofía with Madrid. Juncosa, having succeeded Declan McGonagle, is only the second director of the IMMA.
The museum still concentrates mainly on the purchase of contemporary works artists in life and buys only in the primary market: i.e. with the studios and the galleries. It accepts also the gifts of works of art after 1940 and, thanks to some generous gifts, tends to have a collection representative of the art of this period. Considering its youth, the museum enjoys a completely sizeable collection and proposes exposures of works of its own funds. The museum also concentrates on the reception of exposures as the program of 2007 given at the foot of the page shows it. It is hoped that in the future, it will be granted more space to the museum, so that its current activities côtoient an encyclopedic permanent exposure of modern art, that whose Ireland misses still at present.
The place-even where it is established is striking. Built on the model of the Hotel of the Invalids in Paris, the building is built around an interior court. It is thus made up long corridors the length which one finds a series of rooms of modest size which are encased. This so particular architecture allowed the installation of interesting exposures enjoying a visual original, néanmois, that limits the capacity of the museum to lodge works of big size. Moreover, it is difficult to move works in the building. However, its many rooms allow also the simultaneous presentation several exposures and the museum, at final, is rather well located. It has an interior court, beautiful frontages, a garden baroque remade to nine, a charming room of banquets and a vault. The room of banquets makes it possible to generate returned for the museum thanks to the marriages and with the conferences, as the coffee and the souvenir shop (primarily a bookstore) to the basement do it. The entry of the museum is free.
The old stables of Royal Hospital were restored, increased and converted into studios of artists, which makes it possible the museum to have a program of artists in residence. It has also a club of friends of the museum, organizes educational programs and organizes events everywhere in the country where it organizes the exposure of its works apart from its walls.
