Interstellar Overdrive

Interstellar Overdrive is an instrumental song of the group of Rock psychedelic Britannique Pink Floyd, which appears in 1967 on the album The Piper At the Gates off Dawn . With its 9 minutes 41, it is third instrumental the longest of the group, behind Saucerful has off Secret (song) and Atom Heart Mother (continuation). The song is also the trailer of the film Tonite Let' S All Make Love in London , which left the same year as the album. Several versions of this song are present on pirate albums. This song is particular: it is impromptu and instrumental, which was a first for a rock'n'roll group.

Composition

The guitar makes the opening of the song until the group plays the front . This front is only one improvisation. The song often changes tempo . This front was created when Peter Jenner, the former manager of Pink Floyd tested fredonner a song of which it could not remember the name (generally identified like the cover of " My Little Red Book" of Coils). Syd Barrett followed fredonnement of Jenner with its guitar and used it as bases for the principal melody d'" Interstellar Overdrive".

Various versions

The version studio drawn from The Piper At the Gates off Dawn is that which know the majority of the listeners but, however, other versions studio and live exist. The 16 minutes interpretation (recorded before for Tonite Let' S All Make Love in London ) can, actually, being higher in its more kinetic approach than the beginning of the piece, though they are perhaps more tedious and that the unit seems to trail in length. There are also some pirate recordings, with and without Barrett in the group, which shows that they often improvised and that each execution was different. The version of a television program of BBC, for example, is probably higher than the version studio and present a new section in which the melody of the electric keyboard goes up and whose guitars are " pickées" for an almost démoniaque effect. In the versions of 1969 and 1970, David Gilmour played with a Bottleneck at the end of the piece, in a tempo slower than that of Syd Barrett. A rumor exists according to which a particularly powerful version d'" Interstellar Overdrive" would have been cut album live Ummagumma.

" Interstellar Overdrive" was taken again by many groups of which Hawkwind, Camper Van Beethoven, Melvins, Pearl Jam and The Mars Volta.
