International force of assistance and safety

The international force of assistance and safety (TRUSTED) or International Security and Assistance Forces (ISAF) operates in Afghanistan and constitutes the military component of the Coalition, under the aegis of operative NATO in this country since the war of Afghanistan of 2001.

Its tactical general headquarter is based with Kabul.

It gathered, the 5 October 2006, 32.000 people coming from 37 countries.

The role of France

France contributes to the ISAF by training the future officers of the Afghan national army (ANA) and by carrying out the operation Pamir, charged with for TRUSTED, or ISAF, to lead patrols of security in the province of Kabul and the plain of Shamali, more in north.

In spite of the increasing demands of other Member States of TRUSTED, France always refuses to widen its mandate in Afghanistan, in particular to imply itself in areas more disturbed in lack of manpower.
