International coffee

International Café is a Board game created by Rudi Hoffmann in 1987. The play is initially published by Mattel, and Amigo since 1999. It gained the Spiel of Jahres in 1989.

Principle

Café International is played at least two players. The goal of the play is to place charts representing of the consumers at table, by beginning or supplementing tables of four guests. The winner is that which has the most points at the end of the part. Twelve countries are represented on the plate and the places are envisaged as a preliminary. With each table, there are obligatorily two men and two women. Certain chairs are common to two tables, one thus supplements two tables at the same time by posing a chart.

Aspect of the play

  • a plan of play representing 24 tables of 12 nationalities for 68 sitted places , and the bar of 20 places upright : a central checkerwork which is used as shoe at the end of the play.
  • 100 charts: 48 women, 48 men and 4 jokers
  • Of the tokens to count the points

Composition of the nations

  • Africa, Germany, England, China, Cuba, Spain, the United States, France, India, Italy, Turkey and the USSR.

Course of the play

  • Departure: each player draws five charts left in obviousness on the table. The first player poses one or two charts and withdraws as much of it, and so on. The goal is to mark the most points. The installation of a chart to a table can bring back 1,2,3,4 or 8 points if a table is supplemented. The installation of a chart to the bar can pay from 1 to 5 points then to cause a loss of 2 up to 15 points at the end of the play (the checkerwork is progressive in the loss).
  • interdicts: to begin a table with only one consumer, to place one 2nd man or one 2nd woman at a table where there is not already a couple, to place a chart on a table of another country that it his…
  • the possible ones: to place a joker nimporte where, to supplement two tables at the same time: certain more profitable places are common to two tables.
  • Progressively the tables are complementary and it becomes more complicated to play (you can have in your play 3 Spanish whereas the two tables of this country are already complete).
  • Utilization of the jokers, the joker can be posed like any other chart, but can also replace another, which does not bring back a point, but can avoid losing some at the end of the part. A joker cannot go to the bar, a joker in hand at the end of the play is a loss of 10 points.
  • What brings back points: to form tables of compatriots (all four of the same nationality) the score is double. To voluntarily supplement the tables whose adversary has charts.

End of the play

There are several possibilities of end in this play. This involves an interesting uncertainty according to the strategies used in the part, the number of players and the chance of the pickaxes.
  • 1st end, the 20 boxes of the bar are occupied
  • 2nd end, the 68 chairs with table are occupied
  • 3rd end, it remains only four charts in the bag of pickaxe
  • 4th end, a player does not have more charts
