International airport of Keflavík

The international airport of Keflavík (in Icelandic Keflavíkurflugvöllur ) (IATA: KEF , ICAO : BIKF ) is the main thing Aéroport of Iceland. It is located on the territory of the town of Keflavík and serves the Icelandic capital, Reykjavík of which it is distant of 50 km. It is used as hub for the companies Icelandair and Iceland Express.

An air base, the Keflavik Naval Air Station east was also installed there until its closing the September 30th 2006.

History

The airport was built by the American forces whereas they occupied Iceland during the Second world war. It opened the March 23rd 1943 with an aim initially only military. After the war, it became a point of supply for the transatlantic flights. Until the Years 1980, the civil passengers forwarding or bound for the airport were controlled by the American soldiers.

In 1987, the terminal Leifur Eiríksson opened involving the final separation of the military and civil zones of the airport. This last is still in work of extension and should be finished in the current of the year 2007.
