Insulo of Rozoj

Geography > Europe > Italy > Insulo of Rozoj < Espérantie < Esperanto ----

For one short period, the Insulo of Rozoj (the island with the pinks in Esperanto) was a Micronation near to the Italian coast of the Adriatique.

The business began in 1964, when an Italian engineer, named Giorgio Rosa, accepted the permission to test a novel method for the construction of a large platform of 400 m ² in the Adriatic Sea, with a few kilometers from the Italian coast. This artificial island was supported by strengthened columns being based on the sea-bed.

The June 24th 1968, the artificial island declared its statute of independent state. The evolution of the platform and its scientific uses remained badly known, but it seems that there were a restaurant, a nightclub, a merchant of memories and a post office, like, perhaps, a radio station enfreignant the Italian laws. It also seems that an small group of individuals had repurchased the island with Giorgio Rosa.

The sovereignty of the island was marked by the striking of a Monnaie, a postal Timbre (see photo), and the creation of new a Drapeau (the flag was of orange color, with in its center a white shield decorated of three pink). The official name of the new country was “Insulo of Rozoj”, and was in Esperanto to show the international character of the island. The name had also been selected compared to Giorgio Rosa, because Rosa means Italian Rose.

The Italian government, however, did not appreciate the illegal constitution of this new country in its territorial water. Official representatives of the Italian government came on the platform and seized the power. Little time after, and contrary to the will of the owners, the platform was destroyed.
