Innocent V

Pierre de Tarentaise (v. 1225, Champagny, Savoy - June 22nd 1276, Rome), elected pope the January 21st 1276 Innocent under the name of V . “ Concionator Gallus ” in the Prophecy of Saint Malachie.

Originating in a small village of Tarentaise, but for the valdôtains (Italy) it would be originating in the hamlet of Ecours commune of the Room - Duchy of Savoy at that time there, it joined the Dominican Ordre at the 16 years age. He studied the Théologie with the Sorbonne, where he became then professor. Its fame was such as it gained the title of “ doctor famosissimus ” (“most famous of the doctors”). After having occupied the station of provincial, it was named in 1272 archbishop of Lyon and thus Primat of Gaules. In 1273, it was promoted with the rank of cardinal-bishop of Ostie. He played an important role with the IIe council of Lyon and pronounced the funeral oration of Saint Bonaventure. He extended Christianity until in Mongolia.

The January 21st 1276, after the death of Gregoire X, it was elected Pape and took the name of Innocent V. It died five months later. It left several treaties of theology and canonical Droit, among which a Commentaire on the Sentences of Pierre Lombard (1652), and four treaties philosophical: Of unitate formæ , Of materia cæli , Of æternitate mundi , Of intellectu and voluntate . It was béatifié by the pope Leon XIII in 1898.
