Reference mark
- Sign of its rise to power in the American landscape sportig, Indy Racing League records its first large transfer coming from CART, that of the powerful Penske team and her pilots Hélio Castroneves and Gil de Ferran. The symbolic system is all the more strong as Roger Penske was one of the founders of the CART in 1979.
- the stables Mo Nunn Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing is registered they also full-time in championship IRL, but without to forsake (for the moment) CART.
- competition CART/IRL also continues on the track at the time of the 500 Miles of Indianapolis, where as at the time of the two back issues, the regular competitors of the IRL face those of the CART. With some turns of the arrival, the Canadian Paul Tracy (resulting from the rows of the CART) double Photogravure Castroneves (from now on a regular pilot of the IRL), in an almost simultaneous way with the brandishing of a yellow flag. In a very discussed way, the direction of race invalidates the going beyond of Tracy and thus offers the victory to Castroneves.
- Sarah Fisher returns in the history of the automobile sport in August on the oval of Kentucky while becoming the first pilot woman to sign a pole position in a major series of single-seater.
- Consequence of the marketing policy of General Motors, the engines Aurora take the name of Chevrolet.
