History

Indy Racing League (also called IRL) was founded in 1996 by Tony George, heir to the Hulmann family and organizer of the 500 Miles of Indianapolis. By setting up the IRL, Tony George thus created a scission with CART, championship existing since 1979 and whose Indy 500 was the test queen.

The objective of origin of the IRL was to take the opposite course to the CART (championship with international vocation) by creating a discipline with American philosophy, with races only disputed on oval and in the United States.

After very hard beginnings, the IRL knew to propose a plate with quality in rise to affirm itself like a true rival of CART (become Champ Because), at the point to put in danger the existence of this last.

To note that until 2003, the denomination Indy Racing League indicated the organization which managed the championship, as well as the championship itself. But since 2003, it became unsuitable to speak about Indy Racing League as a championship. The IRL is now only the name of the organization which manages the championship IndyCar Series (new name of championship IRL) as well as the Indy Pro Series, a formula of promotion created in 2002.
