Index of parental stress
The index of parental stress (ISP) was developed with the the United States by Abidin (1990).
In 1996, Bigras and Lafrenière translated and validated this French instrument.
This tool is addressed to the parents having an older child of less than 13 years and evaluates the parental Stress according to subjective interpretation that the relative carries out situations in which it excerce its parental role. More precisely, the ISP makes it possible to evaluate the characteristics of the child (adaptability, acceptability, requirement, mood, hyperactivity and reinforcement) just as the characteristics of the relative (attachment, social depression, insulation, marital relation, restriction, health, feeling of competence) which can be perceived by this last as being factors of stress.
This instrument contains 101 items and is composed of thirteen under-scales, of which six correspond to the field from the child and seven with that of the relative.
A short version of the ISP was also developed by Abidin (1990) and was translated into French by Lacharité (1993). This version evaluates the total parental stress just as three more specific fields: parental distress, interaction parent-child and difficult child.
