Iekaterinbourg
Iekaterinbourg ( Екатеринбург : 1500000 inhabitants) is the third town of Russia, in the past called Sverdlovsk ( Свердловск ) during the Soviet era besides (this name remains the name of use in the Russian stations).
Geographical location
Iekaterinbourg is located on the Asian side of the the Ural at an important railway crossroads between the connections coming from all the parts of the Ural and the remainder of Russia, on the famous line of the Transsibérien.Iekaterinbourg is with: 1667 km in the east of Moscow. The difference with the Moscow +2 hours east time and +5 hours with the hour GMT.
History
The city founded in 1723 and was named name of the woman of the emperor Pierre I {{er}} (known as Pierre the Large one), the empress Catherine, future empress reigning under the name of Catherine Ire (in Russian: Екатерина Iekaterina ).Shortly after the Soviet revolution, the emperor Nicolas II, his wife Alexandra Fedorovna and their children the large-duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria, Anastasia and the Tsarévitch Alexis were assassinated in the cellars of the Villa Ipatiev (property of an industrialist of the city: Nikolaï Ipatiev), the July 17th 1918. The commando of execution was under the orders of the chief of the local Tchéka, Iakov Iourovski. In the honor of Iakov Sverdlov which would have ordered this massacre, the city was renamed Sverdlovsk in 1924.
The city knew an epidemic of Maladie of coal (in English: carbuncle ) in April and May 1979. The Soviet authorities of the time allotted it to contaminated meat. However, the American authorities think that the inhabitants perhaps inhaled accidentally escaped spores of a military installation of biological production of Arme, the accident was officially recognized in 1992 by Boris Eltsine.
It would seem that other escapes (at least one) occurred but the most total Silence is still maintained on this subject. In the center of a Complex militaro-industrialist built at the Soviet era, the city was prohibited the abroads of 1960 to 1990.
Iekaterinbourg found its old name in 1991.
Economy
Nowadays, Iekaterinbourg is an industrial big city. It produces machine tools for the mechanical engineering industry and the metallurgy (factory Ouralmach), of the Acier, the chemical products , the tires and revivals its industry plasturgic. The work of the invaluable stones is a well developed light industry.
Akhademia
A new city located at 5 km in the south of Iekaterinbourg is in the course of construction. Its promoters, the local government and the oil group and of Renova aluminum, want to make of it an example as well architectural as environmental in an area touched hard by industrial and military pollution. The city should extend on: 1200 hectares and to accommodate: 350000 inhabitants.
Culture
The city is an important arts center for the area of the Ural like for Russia. It has in particular many universities, an academy, the Alliance Fran1caise, and institutes in the fields polytechnic, mining, forest, agricultural, of right, medicine and teaching. The branch of the Ural of the establishment and Academy of Science many of scientific research are installed there.
Sport
The city is the seat of the club of female Volley-ball of Ouralotchka Iekaterinbourg and of the club of female Basket-ball UMMC Iekaterinbourg.
