IPCop

IPCop is a Distribution Linux based on Linux From Scratch, acting as Pare-feu.

It aims at providing powerful simple means but to configure a fire wall on an architecture of the type PC. It can protect on such an architecture a family network or the small ones or medium businesses, it offers traditional the Demilitarized zone as well as the tunnels virtual private network (acronym VPN in English).

IPCop can also be used as waiter agent (proxy), waiter providing of the dynamic IP addresses (DHCP), of relay DNS, waiter of time (NTP), and by installing grafts or modules, of good of other things (control of contents, black list, list of access, dynamic DNS, control of traffic, etc…). The support of the customers without wire is also envisaged by the means of a dedicated zone.

In the beginning, IPCop was a Fork of the distribution Linux Smoothwall, since these two projects developed independently, and now diverge in an important way.

IPCop is under license LPG, in Open Source.

The images ISO of the CD-ROMs of installation (less 50Mo in January 2007) are available via a network of mirror sites. The support is available in English language, Frenchwoman, allemande and Dutchwoman. The user interface of IPCop is available in 24 different languages.

A very bottom-of-the-range machine makes it possible to implement it, here an example of such a configuration:

Attention, this configuration basic is appropriate for a domestic use or small companies to 5 stations. It already makes it possible to use the functionality of proxy and the system of detection of intrusion (both greedy in resource memory and calculation processor). To envisage a more muscular configuration for the processor and the random access memory for a professional use.

It is it should be noted that IPCop can only function with the basic functionalities on an architecture of the type Intel 386 provided with 32Mo of random access memory.
