Hypermnesy

The hypermnesy (of the Greek huper , with excess, and mnasthai , to remember), also called exaltation of the memory , indicates an exceptionally intense activity of the Cerveau which results in a extraordinary memory.

Characteristic of the hypermnesy

The hypermnesy is the characteristic to focus its attention on a precise field, but also the fact of declining its memories.

The example often taken again with the cinema is that of the person who focuses herself on the figures, and as soon as she sees an unspecified combination (a number of number plate, a phone number, etc), she remembers automatically the other moments of her life where she already saw this combination.

Origin

The hypermnesy would be due to the fact that the short-term memory of the person passes very quickly in long-term memory, from where the fact of retaining many unimportant details compared to the mass of infos retained.

Concretely, hypermnésique can be focused on the music: with each time he hears a sentence (in a conversation, etc), sentence which he already heard in a song, it with the air of this song at the head. One also notes very often a problem of temporal distance. Indeed, for the certain hypermnesic last events had all place yesterday, and there is no distance (because of the lack of attenuation of the memory) between an arrived event one month ago and an event which has occurred three years ago.

The hypermnesy brings various feelings at the person. They depend on the field of focusing. It brings also various desires. Examples: the person is afraid that there is a problem of storage of all this information as from one moment, from where the need to write or draw a great number of things. That can lead the anguish to remember all as well more.

The syndrome of Targowla

The syndrome of Targowla is one of the cases of pathological hypermnesy : it is a traumatic variety of Névrose of war which causes a hypermnesy of the emotional type, in connection with recalls with the memory of one or more memories traumatisants - this syndrome is in particular typical old off-set of the camps Nazis. The traumatic neurosis of war results from a psychic conflict unsolved.

The Symptôme S are of an emotional and emotive nature, but the patient keeps his intact mental functions. The hypermnesy does not deteriorate the personality seriously. As in any neurosis, the patient is conscious of his hypermnesy and the disorders of behavior which it implies. He can thus dominate about it, at least partly, the effects.

Disorders (and management of the hypermnesy)

The hypermnésique one needs " compiler" information at least once every 48 hours. I.e. it will pass by again the wire of the events lived for " to be able the classer" in its memory. Bonds between the people and the events are then carried out.

In the case of an political analyst, the hypermnesy induces a better comprehension of very complex situations. But at people who do not work their hypermnesy, that can bring paranoia (a negative event is related to a whole series of other events " neutres" nonobjectively dependant).

The psychiatric disorders associated with the hypermnesy are more or less serious according to the degree of neurosis. It is inter alia:

  • Anguish
  • Aggressiveness
  • Lack of insurance in company (which often induces an aggressiveness like compensation)
  • passion Interprétation of the events
  • Frigidité or Impuissance
  • Paranoïa

But for speaking about disorders, it is rather necessary to quote the fact that a person reached of hypermnesy is, compared to the others, constantly reflecting. Any thing for it is to be classified, is information to be treated.

That being quoted, the awakening of this disease makes it possible to gum the disadvantages to keep only the advantages. There is also the example of a social negotiator who thanks to his hypermnesy managed to solve complex social conflicts, because it managed to think very quickly on all the possible solutions and the possible consequences (and this, in particular thanks to its general culture in the social domain).

Hypermnesy in the literature and the cinema

The extraordinary capacities of hypermnesic fascinated many writers and scenario writers (inter alia in the kind Fantastique). These are the effects, more than the disease itself, which interested the majority of these artists, from where many reinterpretations and more or less erroneous or exaggerated uses hypermnesy.
