Hyūga
is old a Province of Japan which corresponds to what is today the Préfecture of Miyazaki.
The province was surrounded by the provinces of Bungo, Higo, Osumi and Satsuma. The old provincial capital was located close to the current city of Saito . For the Sengoku period, the area was divided into 2 strongholds. One occupied the north of the province and was organized around the town of Agata (close to Nobeoka) and of its castle; the other occupied the south of the province and was organized around the town of Obi and its castle (close to Nichinan). The stronghold of the south of the province was held by the Clan Shimazu. At the beginning of the era Meiji, the province was officially divided into 5 districts.
