Hugues of Arles

Hugues of Arles (v. 882 - † April 10th 948), wire of Théobald of Arles and Berthe, girl of Lothaire II of Lotharingie, it was high with the dignity of count d' Arles and count of Vienna then Marquis of Provence in 905 by the emperor Louis III the Blind man.

Biography

In 911, it leaves Vienna and settles with Arles with an important court bourguignone. In 912, he marries Willa of Provence, (v. 873 - † 914), girl of Boson V of Provence and Ermengarde of Italy from which he is widowed in 914. Willa is the recent widow of Rodolphe Ier of Burgundy († October 25th, 912).

Arles becomes the true capital of the Kingdom and Vienna that the residence of the unhappy sovereign cancels Louis III. However, the arrival of Hugues creates strong tensions between the local aristocracy and the Burgundian aristocracy brought by the count. One can remember for example, that Manassès of Arles, archbishop of Arles in 920, was wire of a count of Chalon and nephew of Hugues. These tensions which result sometimes in murders, culminate in the years 915 - 920.

After the assassination of Berenger Ier of the Friuli occurred on April 7th, 924, it seizes the vacant throne with the support of Rodolphe II of Burgundy (880937). July 9th, 926, it is crowned king d' Italie with Pavia. It then transmits the county of Arles to his brother Boson (885 - † 936).

After the death of Louis III the Blind man in 928, Hugues succeeds to him on the kingdom of Provence and Burgundy Cisjurane.

In 931, it makes plug his half-brother Lambert of Tuscany, marquis de Toscane and entrusts the marquisat of Tuscany to his brother Boson of Arles.

In 932, Hugues had married Marozie, sénatrice of Lateran, and widow of Guy of Tuscany, half-brother of Hugues, in the town of Rome.

In 934, and according to the agreement which it signed into 926 with him, it yields to Rodolphe II of Burgundy Provence which is definitively attached to the Royaume of Burgundy.

In 937, it forces Berthe de Souabe - widowed of Rodolphe II of Burgundy and girl of Burchard II, duke of Souabe -, to marry it. However, his wife resided primarily in her castle of Dovecote-on-Morges, on Right Bank of the Léman, Hugues having many mistresses and the many bastard ones. According to a chronicle, it would have as, seem-you it, dishonoured his daughter-in-law Adélaïde of Burgundy, “before even as she had not arrived at the layer of her son”.

In 945, a rebellion carried out by Bérenger II of Ivrée pushes it to give up the throne of Italy in April 947 and to take refuge near his/her Berthe niece in Arles, where he dies on April 10th 948.
