Hugues Capet

Hugues Capet (v. 940 - October 24th 996), was king of the Francs of 987 with 996, founder of the Dynastie capétienne.

The heir

Hugues Capet is the son of Hugues Large the, Duc of the Francs, and Hedwige of Saxony, or Avoia , girl of Henri Ier of Saxony, known as Henri Ier the Bird-catcher , king of Germanie. (ascent)

He marries Adélaïde of Aquitaine (v. 945 - v. 1004), girl of Adèle of Normandy and Guillaume III Head of Packing, count de Poitiers of 934 with 963, and duke of Aquitaine of 928 with 963. They had four children:

Gisele (969 - v. 1000), which marries Hugues Ier d' Abbeville count de Ponthieu,
Edwige (Hadwige) (970 - 1013) which marries Regnier IV, count de Hainaut. It remarie with Hugues III count Dasbourg,
Robert II the Piles (972 - 1031), which will succeed to him.

Hugues Capet is the great nephew and grandson of the Robertiens Eudes and Robert Ier which was both elected officials kings of the Francs.

His/her father, Hugues Large the, dies the June 16th 956, and the young person Hugues, the elder one of three wire of the late duke, is still minor. With his/her two brothers, they are put under the supervision of their maternal uncle Brunon, archbishop of Cologne.

In heritage of his father, it becomes count d' Orléans and Abbé Laïc of Saint Martin's day de Tours, of Marmoutier, Saint-Germain-of-Meadows and Saint-Denis. In 960, the king Lothaire agree to return the titles to him that held his/her father with knowing duke of the Francs and Marquis de Neustrie.

Accession with the throne and Sacring

Louis V, the king Carolingien dies suddenly in May 987. It does not have a child. Its more close relative is Charles of Low-Lotharingie, his uncle. This last had not been associated with the reign of his/her brother Lothaire.

June 1st, 987, the large lords of the nobility of the kingdom meet in Senlis to discuss the succession to the throne of France. The archbishop Adalbéron of Rheims which had been shown of treason by king Lothaire then by his son Louis V, makes a speech in discredit of Charles of Low-Lotharingie and pleads in favor of the candidature of Hugues, duke of the Francs, resulting from the chalk-lining of Robertiens. The aristocrats thus elect Hugues who is crowned a few days later, Sunday July 3rd 987, in the cathedral of Noyon. The king with the cover - of its Chape of abbot - inaugurates the dynasty of the Capétiens, which directed France without interruption during eight centuries, until the August 10th, 1792, even if the direct line of Capétiens dies out in 1328.

Reign

In May 988, the Carolingian applicant Charles of Low-Lotharingie went maïtre of Laon and Rheims to the end of the summer 989. But after treason of the bishop Adalbéron de Laon, this last book with Hugues Capet his candidate who is imprisoned with Orleans in 991.

Hugues Capet made elect and crown his Robert oldest son a few months after his own election, the December 25th 987. Until Philippe II, each king de France makes crown his son, thus avoiding the election of the king by the aristocrats. Philippe II institutes then the rule of the Primogéniture.

Reached Variola, it dies out on Saturday, October 24, 996 at the 55 years age in its residence called " Juifs" , in Beauce, close to Prasville between Chartres and Orleans.

Place of the death

Certain historians think that Hugues Capet would have died on October 24th, 996 with Prasville with the castle of the Jews, the true name of this castle being Juy or Juees in Former French who became Jewish by deformation. In 1987 (millenium of crowning) of research allowed to locate the Oppidum medieval into full fields, with the locality Petit Teillay. Stereotypes taken of plane confirmed the presence on this site of old a feudal Motte surrounded by a sophisticated defense system.
