The Fleuve Hudson is a river of 506 km length, running mainly in the State of New York and partly forming the border between the States of New York and the New Jersey. The name of the river comes from Henry Hudson, English sailing on behalf of France and of the Holland which explored the river in 1609. However the first European in measurement to observe it was the Italian Giovanni da Verrazano in 1524, whose forwarding was financed by the merchants florentins Lyon and by François Ier.

Geography

The official source of the Hudson river is the lake Tear off the Clouds (literally tear of the clouds) in the mounts Adirondacks. However, the river which rises from the lake is rather known under the names of Feldspar Brook then of Opalescent To rivet , rivers which are thrown then in Hudson on the level of the town of Tahawus. The true river takes really its source only a few kilometers in the north of Tahawus, on the level of the lake Henderson. The confluence of Hudson and the river Mowhawk, its principal affluent is located at Troy (in the north of Albany, capital of the State of New York), in the south of the “ Federal Prejudice ” (literally federal stopping) which makes the junction between “ Upper Hudson River Valley ” and the “ Lower Hudson River Valley ” (upper parts and lower of the valley of Hudson). Starting from Troy, Hudson widens little by little, until throwing in the Atlantic Ocean, between Manhattan, Staten Island and the coasts of the New Jersey in the Upper Bay of New York. The Dutch had initially named Hudson “ Noort Rivier ” (northern river) in opposition to the Delaware, baptized “ Zuide Rivier ” (river southern), and the name can still sometimes get along in radio programs. The name Hudson River was imagined by the English in the honor of Henry Hudson, even if the British navigator had gone up and explored the river on behalf of the Compagnie Dutchwoman of the Eastern Indies.

Hudson River is regarded as a river, however, the Lower Hudson River Valley (left southern the valley of Hudson) is actually a marine estuary, since the influence of the tide feels until the Federal Prejudice of Troy. One thus tends to wrongly regard Hudson as one of the longest rivers of the the United States, whereas it is in fact geographically only one estuary on most of its course. This phenomenon explains the name Mohican river, Muh-He-kun--tuk , which means “the river that goes up on the two sides”. The strong tides return thus sometimes navigation in the port of New York or on the river delicate; during the winter, it happens that blocks of ice sail on the course of the river, north in the south or the south in north, at the liking of the tides. The approximate flow of the river is about 425 m ³ /s on the level of Troy, whereas it reaches 606 m ³ /s on the level of New York.

Hudson River is sometimes called the “drowned River”. Indeed, the consecutive rise of the level of water to the the Glaciation of Wisconsin, most recent Glaciation, involved a marine incursion which drowned certain coastal plains, and brought salt water to the level of the mouth of the river. The current bed of the river, L Hudson Canyon , very touched by erosion on the level of the littoral is a very important fishing zone. The old bed of the river is very clearly delimited under the Atlantic Ocean, by extending to the edge from the continental shelf. To north, Hudson is connected to the Lac Érié by the Canal Érié, which makes it possible to obtain a direct connection between the Atlantic Ocean and the Big lakes.

The Narrows

The Narrows is the maritime déroit which separates the districts from Brooklyn and Staten Island, on the level of the mouth of Hudson. It ensures connection between the northern part and the southern part of bay of New York (the New York Bay ), and was regarded a long time as the maritime gate of the city, while having constituted throughout the History the principal access to the port of the city.

The formation of the Narrows goes back to approximately six thousand years, at the time of the last Glaciation. Previously, the islands of Staten Island and Long Island were connected, and prevented Hudson from throwing in the Atlantic Ocean via the strait. The river was thrown then in the ocean in the Raritan Bay , southernmost than the Narrows , while following a way located more at the west, in the current state of the New Jersey, along the Volcan S Watchung.
