Howea

Howea is one of Palmiers endemic in the island of Lord Howe, located close to the east coast of the Australia.

Classification

  • Subfamily: Arecoideae.

    • Tribe: Areceae
      • Subgroup: Linospadicinae

The kind divides its subgroup with the following kinds: Linospadix , Laccospadix , Calyptrocalyx .

It includes/understands two species,

  • Howea belmoreana (C.Moore & F.Muell.) Becc., Malesia 1:66 (1877).

  • Howea forsteriana (C.Moore & F.Muell.) Becc., Malesia 1:66 (1877).

The two species are threatened and classified vulnerable on the red Liste of the UICN.

Habitat

The natural habitat is variable. It thrives on sands corraliens but also pushes in the mountains on basaltic grounds. It is abundantly planted apart from its medium of origin like plants decorative. It is in particular very widespread like plants of interior.

Description

  • Feather-grass. The feather-grass solitary, smooth and is irregularly ringed. It measures up to 10 meters in height.

  • Feuille S. the sheets are Pennée S and bases is covered with long wire. The segments are regularly distributed along the sheet.

H. belmoreana is a palm tree whose feather-grass can reach 10 meters. The sheets green dark, with the very round form, are spaced regularly, and form a broad crown.
