The first mention of the dogs called Hovawart is in the German codes of the Middle Ages - Sachsenspiegel and Schwabenspiegel (1274), which mentioned some " Hofewart" or " Hofwart" who was watchdog of the aristocracy. Hovawart probably comes from the German Berger which was called with the Middle Ages " Hovawarth" and in the code of the law of Bojan like " Hofewart" , " Hofwart" or " Hofward". The approximate description of medieval Hovawart would be something like that: it is a dog of intermediate size (60-65cm) with long bulky hairs, a tail falling and from small falling ears. Its color is roughly brown grisâtre, black and fire or clouded. It was used like keeps dwelling but also to keep herds. After a few centuries, efforts multiply to recreate the race hovawart, in particular by selectors like Bertram König, his/her son Kurt F.König, Alwin Busch, J.A.Becker and Theo Gräb. First Hovawart was recorded in 1922. It is not possible to say which was the creator of the Hovawart race, but those mentioned men who played a great part.
