The Flagey , old House of the Radio was created in 1930 under the name of Belgian National institute of Broadcasting. Installed Place Flagey with Ixelles in a building of style Art nouveau conceived by Joseph Diongre (1878-1963).

The building has angles rounded softening the massive volume of this blue stone and ocher yellow brick construction. Horizontality is underlined by a continuous glazing and a hood overhanging the ground floor.

Work is compared with a steamer with its bridges and its long corridors. The interior preserved its furniture of origin of style art Déco. The idea of this building accepted the first price of a contest organized for the construction of the House of the Radio.

Construction lasts of 1935 with 1938, it is then one of the first houses of the radio in Europe.

On a ground of spongy nature due to a Ground water, it was necessary to install a system of permanent pumping. The building is built on a concrete bed and copper sheets.

Finished in 1938, the INR emitted 6:45 with 24:00 uninterrupted.

The building comprises 12 studios of recording of trapezoidal plan whose studio 4 comprising celebrates it an organ of 8  000 pipes. The building is air-conditioned and served by 13 elevators and is equipped with the radiophonic equipment most modern. The turret of angle is used to protect the mast from emission as wired for sound images. The soundproofing is irreproachable.

  • In 1960, appears initials R.T.B for Belgian Radiodiffusion Television, the R.T.B.F appearing only in 1977.
  • In 1998, the old INR was classified and sold at the public limit company “the House of Radio operator Flagey,”.

Renovated and inaugurated in September 2002 under the name of Flagey , it found today its function of origin with the creation of a musical space with studios of recording, concert halls and cinema. It became a place with the eclectic programming. One finds there weekends discovered, projections images and its, concerts springboards of midday Friday, meetings cinema-brunch one Sunday per month… and well of others still.
