The origin of the Maison of Savoy goes up in 1032 when the Savoy is integrated with the second kingdom of Burgundy, with the Saint Romain-Germanic Empire. Far from the German emperor, the seigniories create for themselves randomly wars, marriages… The House of Savoy is a European dynasty having carried the titles of count de Savoie (1033), then of duke of Savoy (1416), prince de Piémont, king de Sicile (1713), king de Sardaigne (1716) and king d' Italie (1861).
The classification of the successive chiefs of this house does not take account of the changes of title. The only exception will come from the kings Humbert Ier of Italy and Humbert II of Italy which will not take again on their account the purely Savoyard succession, from where the inexistence from Humbert IV and V…

The following territories belonged to the family of Savoy, one time or another: Beaufort, Beauges, Bugey, Bresse, Chablais, Faucigny, Genoa, Genevese (but not Geneva), Maurienne, Country of Gex, Country Niçois, Oneille, Piedmont, Sardinia, Clean Savoy and tectonic foreland, Tarentaise, Valley of Aoste, Were worth (partly), Vaudois.
Branches of the family
The house of Savoy counts several branches:- the elder, extinct branch in 1263, it is a junior by the branch of Piedmont (Amédée V of Savoy) which became chief of the house of Savoy.
- the branch of the lords of Piedmont, resulting from Thomas II of Piedmont († 1259), lord of Piedmont. This one had three wire authors of three branches:
- Thomas III of Piedmont, author of the branch of princes de Piémont, extinct in 1418
- Amédée V of Savoy, count de Savoie, author of a new branch of the counts de Savoie
- Louis Ier († 1302), author of the lords of Vaud, extinct in 1339.
The branch of the counts de Savoie resulting from Amédée V had several branches:
- the elder, extinct branch in 1831, it is a family member of Savoy-Carignan which became chief of the house of Savoy.
- the branch of Savoy-Nemours, extinct in 1659, resulting from Philippe of Savoy († 1533), duke of Nemours, wire of Philippe II of Savoy,
- the branch of Savoy-Carignan, resulting from Thomas of Savoy († 1533), prince de Carignan, wire of Charles-Emmanuel Ier of Savoy.
- the elder branch is still represented, and became in 1831 the house of Savoy, with the extinction of the elder branch, then in 1861 the house of Italy.
- a branch junior, counts de Soissons, died out in 1736.
The house of Italy gave two branches juniors, still represented:
- Savoy-Aoste, dukes of Aoste.
- dukes of Genoa.
Elder of the House of Savoy
- Before 1861: to see duke of Savoy
- 1861 - 1946: to see king d' Italie
- 1946 - 1983: Humbert II (1904-1983)
- 1983 - ........: Victor-Emmanuel of Savoy (1937-), titrated prince de Naples , wire of the precedent. However part of the royalists Italy NS do not regard it any more as applicant with the throne, following his marriage in 1970 with Marina Doria, resulting from the Bourgeoisie. They consider that the duke Amédée III of Aoste (born in 1943) became of right the applicant to the throne of Italy (with for heir its son the duke Aymon to Pouilles). The partisans of Victor-Emmanuel of Savoy answer them that no dynastic rule or of family imposes the marriage of the applicant on the throne of Italy with a princess of royal blood and even less with one woman resulting from the Aristocratie. The only obligation is that of a church wedding: what respected Marina Doria and Victor-Emmanuel of Savoy (the positions of his/her mother the Marie-Josée queen, died in 2001, were always limpid on this subject).
