House of Anhalt
The house of Anhalt is one of the most former princely families of Germany, which reigna in particular on the Duché of Anhalt. It constitutes a branch of famous the Maison of Ascanie.
Princes d' Anhalt, initially counts, then immediate princes of the Empire at the 13th century, belonged originally to the Duché of Saxony. Their principality, which in 1211 was very whole between the hands of Henri, grandson of Albert the Bear, voter of Brandebourg, dismembered after Joachim II (1536-86), and formed the four principalities of:
- Bernbourg, this branch had for last representative Alexandre-Charles, died without heir in 1863, and was united with that of Anhalt-Dessau.
- Coëthen,
- Zerbst, and of
- Dessau.
