Honshū
Honshū (本州) is the largest island of the Japan, formerly called Hondō, on which are inter alia the towns of Tōkyō, Ōsaka, Kyōto, Hiroshima, Nara and Nagoya.
It is the seventh larger island of the world in surface and the second more populated after the island of Java.
It is stretched in length on more 1 350 km, its width vary between 50 and 250 km, for a surface of 225 800 km ², which represents approximately 60 % of the entire surface of Japan.
Mountainous and volcanic, Honshū is often prone to earthquakes, which cause sometimes the death of thousands of people. The culminating point of this island is the Mont Fuji, volcano active which culminates with 3 776 meters. Many rivers furrow this island, of which most famous, Shinano. She is currently threatened by pollution of the chemical plants which were built there at the end of the XXe century.
She is divided into several areas:
- Tōhoku in north;
- Kantō in the east;
- Chūbu in the center;
- Kansai (or Kinki) towards the south;
- Chūgoku in the south.
