Holy Monique
Monique , called Holy Monique , born in 331 or 332 with Thagaste (Algeria) and died in 387 in Ostie (Italy), Christian woman of Berber origin , is the mother of Augustin d' Hippone, found holy by the Roman Catholic church and the orthodoxe Église.
It had had to marry very young person with pagan name of Patrice that Augustin, who wrote much on his parents then, described like a man violent and carried to adultery.
Monique would not have ceased all her life as well requesting for conversion her son and of her husband. This last waited the year preceding its death for exaucer its wishes; for its part, Augustin had converted when it entered to the school of Saint Ambroise, with Milan.
The excavations of the XIXe century with Ostie found the marble plate commemorative of Monique.
Iconography
The iconographic representations of Holy Monique appear only in XVe century, and are especially diffused by the convents of augustins and augustines. She is illustrated out of dress of widow, with belt, veil and guimpe. One finds it surrounded by twelve monks augustins, in the church of the Saint Spirit to Florence (FRA Filippo Lippi).
