Geography, places holy
The Holy Land corresponds geographically to the Palestine (Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territoires) to which, if one takes the criterion of the sites mentioned in the Évangiles like having been visited by Jesus-Christ, it is necessary to add the Golan (area of Baniyas, Panéas or Césarée of Philippe), the southernmost coast of the Lebanon (with Tyr and Sidon) and part of the Jordan (the Béthanie-with-beyond-of-Jordan).
Principal the holy places Christian is, with Jerusalem, the the Holy Sepulchre, the Golgotha (Martyrdom), the Mount of Olives, Gethsémani, the Cénacle of Jerusalem to the Mont Sion, the basilica Holy-Anne of Jerusalem and the probatic Piscine, with Bethlehem, the Basilique of the Nativity and with Nazareth, the basilica of the Annunciation.
Moreover, of many sites of Galileo like the Lake Tibériade or the mount Thabor are marked memory of the presence of Christ.
History
During the life of Jesus (approx. 4 av. J. - C. - 33 a. J. - C.), the Holy Land was in the Roman orbit, with kings (sometimes of the kinglets) Jewish more or less dependant on Rome. The territory like the capacity was the object of complex and moving divisions. The history retained the figures of Hérode Large the and Pontius Pilate.
During the the Middle Ages, the Pape S encouraged the kings and the noble ones to leave in Croisade and to make the conquest of the Holy Land to take it with the Moslem . Before the crusades and well after, the Holy Land remained a destination of Pèlerinage Christians and also the permanent place of dwelling of Christian communities (being considered today as Palestinians; of orthodoxe confession, catholic or reformed, of Greek rite, Latin or Armenian, in particular).
Institutions
There are three patriarch S in Jerusalem: Greek, Latin, Armenian. They have jurisdiction on the local Church and take care on the holy spot and the pilgrims.
There is moreover a Custodie of Holy Land (franciscains), which goes back to the time of Saint François d' Assise and takes care on the majority of the holy places whose property belongs to the Catholic church.
