Geography
History
It is one of the oldest inhabited sites of the Viscount of Fezensaguet. The village was called originally the Borough (Pagus) and then took the name of Holy-Gem, sister of Holy-Quitterie, martyrisée in Galicia (Spain) on August 15th, 109. Holy-gem was a high place of the worship druidic, as still certain sites testify some. As of the ancient time, the territory is inhabited: many prehistoric vestiges of it are the proof. After ploughings, several places let see Gallo-Roman vestiges: currencies and tégulae, a burial of child, a necropolis with incineration and burial. If one does not know the exact date of the Gem erection Holy in parish, it was noticed that all the parishes having the name of holy were set up at the end of XIe century or the beginning of XIIe century. Holy-gem obtained in 1275 its habits granted by its three coseigneurs: Géraud V, Count d' Armagnac, Holy-Gem Bernard and Pilfort de Léaumont. They were confirmed by Antoine of Manages in 1497. The Holy-Gem lords appoint each year the consuls of the place. The castle was located at the west on a hillock particularly isolated by ditches and the vault castrale was in the center. The Holy-Gem lords are quoted in the cartulaire of XIIe century. The cadrastal map of 1826 shows us the layout of a vast oval enclosure located at the north of the village. The old parish church rose inside the current cemetery. In 1824, the commune of Holy-Gem was attached to Lauret, which is located at 2 km in the south-west of the village, by the intervention of Mr. de Castelbajac, par of France. The first mention of Lauret appears in 1295 as being “Castrum Seu Villa”; what suggests the assumption of a small strengthened borough of which there does not remain any more any trace. In 1861, the commune of Holy-Gem also recovers the grounds despoiled by Monfort in 1826.
