Holy-Menehould

Holy-Menehould is a common French, located in the department of the Marne and the area Champagne-Ardenne. It is the capital of the Argonne and one of the sub-prefectures of the Marne.

To note that the official orthography of the name of city (INSEE) is without accent whereas the site of the city written Ménehould .

To also note that people of the vintage more rarely say Menou or Holy-Menou and pronounce Ménéhould .

Its inhabitants is called Ménehildiens.

Geography

The city is built in edge of the Forêt of Argonne. It extends to the feet from the hillock from Gaize, where its strong castle was and on the edges of the Aisne and Auve.

History

The city is besieged twice at the time of the Fronde: in November 1652, the Slingers (among them, Vauban, junior with the regiment by Cop) besiege and take the city; in November 1653, the royal army (with Vauban still, which was joined the king) takes again the city.

Most of the city was destroyed in 1719 by a fire. The city is rebuilt in a remarkable style, with the example of the Town hall, whose first stone was posed in 1730.

Holy-Menehould is also known as the city where the king Louis XVI was recognized at the time of his escape in 1791.

Gastronomical speciality

The feet of pig “to Holy-Ménehould” are boiled a long time then breaded. The receipt existed already at the time of Charles VII, for which one was used the dish when he visited the city in 1435. A local legend wants that Louis XVI was stopped in Varennes to be itself delayed to eat some at the time of the stop of its car to Holy-Menehould. Alexandre Dumas contributed much to the celebrity of this local speciality by giving some an enthusiastic description in its Grand dictionary of the kitchen .

  • Sainte Ménehould, born in Perthes at times mérovingiens, it lives with his/her sisters in small communities of evangelic life, being devoted to the prayer and the service of the patients. She dies in Bienville (Haute-Marne) where she is buried (490). Thanks to its reputation of holiness, it becomes owner of several churches and gave its name to the capital of Argonne where was transferred an important relic from holy in 1379.
