The Hollands Diep (or: Hollandsch Diep ), this large arm of River of the delta of the the Rhine and the Meuse to the Netherlands, belonged to the river route principal between Rotterdam and Antwerp.
Hollands Diep is born with the confluence from the Amer and the Nouvelle Merwede, on the level of Lage Zwaluwe.
The Dordtsche Kil is thrown in Hollands Diep on with dimensions one of northern bank on the level of Moerdijk.
On the level of Numansdorp Hollands Diep separates into two, the Haringvliet and the Volkerak, on the level of the highway crossroads of Hellegatsplein, between the Hoeksche Waard with north, (via the Haringvlietbrug), Goeree-Overflakkee in the west (via the Hellegatsdam) and the Brabant-Septentrional in the south (via the Volkerakdam).
In the east, are the Ponts of Moerdijk, which connect the island of Dordrecht to theSeptentrional one. There are three Pont S in Moerdijk: a road bridge and two railway bridges, for the normal lines and for the HSL-Zuid, LGV between Amsterdam and Antwerp.
At the beginning, Hollands Diep was called Wijvekeen. The Inondation of 1216 created a breach in the dunes on the level of Voorne and formed by consequence the Haringvliet (thus named since 1315). Around 1250 the river reached the Striene, since water far in the Brabant were drained.
Prince Johan Willem Friso drowned in Hollands Diep the 14 juliet 1711 at the time of the crossing between Moerdijk and Strijensas.
The Fortification of Hollandsch Diep and Volkerak was built with the XVIIIe century to push back possible maritime attacks.
