History of Picardy

The history of Picardy is very old since important vestiges of the most moved back times of the Préhistoire were discovered there: the Abbevillien and the Acheuléen drawing their names from sites picards.
The historian Jules Michelet said: The French history seems piled up in Picardy.

Prehistory

The presence of men pre-néandertaliens there are 450 to 300.000 years is attested in the Somme thanks to excavations carried out with Amiens (Saint-Acheul district) and with Cagny, village close.

Tonic with more than 14 to 15.000 years, a seasonal camping of hunters of Renne S, modern men known as of Cro-Magnon, was discovered with Verberie, near Compiegne (Oise).

With the third millennium before our era, the megalithic burial collective of the Roadway-Tirancourt (Somme), consisted of large sandstone flagstones, accommodates in several centuries of use nearly 350 late and constitutes one of the most important vestiges of this nature of Europe. At that time, Picardy is strewn with villages joining together at more some rectangular houses of wood and ground from 10 to 40 m length, of a simple but effective architecture.

Antiquity

As of IIIe century before our era, the Picardy is divided between several Celtic people (Ambiens, Bellovaques and Suessions). To the Belgians is allotted the installation of the trophy and of the sanctuary of Ribemont-on-Anchors (Somme) where thousands of human bones pile up.
